Self

I, me, mine, myself.

Over the years, I have come to realise that these are dangerous words that we can subconsciously cling onto too tightly. Tough times make us discover our true nature beneath the stillness and maturity we portray. We all care about ourselves and what people think of us. It's only natural that we want to protect ourselves for good reasons, but often times that overrides everything else.

Dr. Strange was faced with the brutal, sharp truth about himself even as he said goodbye to his dying master who echoed into his ears saying, 'it's not about you.' (Yes, I am talking about THAT Marvel movie). Our daily decisions have been programmed to revolve around outcomes that benefit ourselves, even if some of us might find harder than others to admit this true fact. We come up with excuses like, 'I am an indecisive person' when it comes to committing to something or someone, or 'I am tired' when we are asked to do more than required. As you can imagine, the list goes on.

We can be so caught up in seeking and chasing the perfect lives for ourselves that it becomes like an endless loop of meaningless pursuit. We splurge on food, trips and materialistic things that satisfy ourselves or our social media feed rather than investing into people that are in our lives, plainly because it is harder to live life loving real people. It's so much easier to sit and scroll through pictures rather than call someone or listen to someone. We have slowly become so afraid of invading people's personal spaces that we stopped caring even when we should.

Tonight, I was reminded to put myself away to live beyond that.

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21
